Back to the Future
On a long October flight I came across a hang glider jumping off a
400' knoll that juts up out of otherwise flat grazing land. With hardly
a second thought, I chopped power, winged over, and came around low
on the back side of the knoll.
The guy's 2 friends on the hill lost sight of me, but
suddenly I rounded the knoll right next to them. Their startled
grin was ear-to-ear. I glided further down, passed 10 feet over
the hang glider just after he touched down, then circled back and
landed, coasting to a stop right here without even touching the
brakes. ...Couldn't have planned it better if I tried.
The pilot spent the next hour fitting a 12HP 2 stroke engine and prop to the hang glider. He had just bought the power setup from some place in Germany. Except for the price he paid and the sophistication of it, the addition was how hang gliders evolved into ultralights in the first place. I couldn't stick around to see him try it ...I still had a long way to go.
